203communityday

Way back in the summertime (remember the summer, ahhhh) we told you about Tory and Roscoe Brown, the sister and brother team behind the Fairfield County inspired clothing brand, The Two Oh Three (read more HERE). Now, these industrious Westporters are spreading the love in a totally different way – they’re launching a community wide initiative to give back and inspire kindness. On February 3 (get it, 2-03), they are inviting the community to perform simple, random acts of kindness throughout the county – leave a sweet note for a friend, smile at a stranger, or carry a bag of groceries for someone who looks like they need a hand – they’re all easy ways to make someone feel special.

In an effort to spread warmth and generosity, the day will culminate in a free glove-giveaway at the lower parking lot of the Westport Library (across from Matsu Sushi) at 6:30 pm.  Who gets the free gloves…that’s up to you – you’re job is to give them to someone who could use a little warmth!

What inspired these ambitious young people to tackle this mission? We asked Tory and Roscoe, and here’s what they said!

Fairfieldista: What inspired you to create the 203 community day?

Tory & Roscoe: During the holiday season we noticed that there was an overwhelming amount of local events and charity efforts taking place within our community. These endeavors included: food drives, toy drives, coat drives, town wide holiday parties, and family friendly celebrations. With the holiday season now over, community wide initiatives seem to be less common. At The Two Oh Three, we believe in a strong sense of bringing people together who may not normally interact with each other, but for the common good of our home. The reason that we chose February 3rd as the date for this event, is because of the significance of the date- 02-03! We are hoping to make it a yearly tradition for our company to give back to “The 203” on 02-03.

Fairfieldista: What do you hope to achieve?

Tory & Roscoe: The goal of our Community Day is simple: to brighten as many people’s day as possible through a small act of kindness—handing out gloves. We believe that the tiniest efforts can have a massive impact on individuals and their communities. Unfortunately, a lot of the time, these efforts are avoided or written-off as unimportant. We are ambitious to spark a change within our community— a desire to help others year-round. We want this goal to become contagious.

Fairfieldista: Why gloves? What is the significance of knitted gloves?

Tory & Roscoe: Our hands are one of the biggest tools we have as humans. The ability to build, fix, and help one another with these tools should be respected and taken care of. The reason we settled on knit gloves is because a pair of gloves is a small thing that can make a big difference in the winter months. That’s what we are pushing to encourage. We want people to realize that a small act of goodwill really can go a long way.

In fact, if you check out our blog (http://www.thetwoohthree.com/keepin-up-with-the-scene/ ) you can find details on how we are using our social media accounts to encourage acts of kindness. All you have to do is tag us in a post explaining what you’ve done to brighten someone else’s day and you will automatically save money on your next purchase. The more good you do, the more money you save. There are even ways to win free apparel!

Fairfieldista: Do you see this as an event that can be expanded to other communities?

Tory & Roscoe: Our goal is for people to look at us not as a brand that is trying to do something nice to push our product, but rather to see the difference we can make in small acts of kindness and effort. If we stopped selling apparel tomorrow, this is something we hope can last a lifetime and that our kids can partake in and their kids as well. We are working non stop to get the word out about the community day prior to February 3rd. The more 203-ers we have, the more good we can do as a community!

Fairfieldista: How did you raise the funds to purchase the gloves?

Tory & Roscoe: This is our way of giving back. The funds are coming from a portion of our sales but also out of our pocket as well. We hope in years to come that we can get donations to help the cause and expand how much we give back to the area code that we call home.
